Take CDW, which is a mega information technology (IT) distributor. About a year ago, the company launched Conduit. Basically, it is a social networking site focused on small business IT pros.

According to Lauren McCadney - who heads up the effort - the site has grown organically, as members have connected with each other to solve problems. This is important since small companies usually have one or two IT pros in their organization. So yes, things can get isolated and loney.

But there were risks. After all, user-generated content can be tricky. What if members make bad comments about CDW?

"Members have good manners on the site," said McCadney. "It hasn't been a problem." In fact, there is a separate section, called CDW Talk, where members can vent.

Conduit has also found ways to monetize things, such as through sponsorships. For example, there is a makeover contest; that is, a small business can win up to $50,000 in services and support from Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).

For those of you who haven't been following Dell's "green" initiatives, this is just the latest in a string of them this year.

In addition to powering its entire corporate headquarters using green energy, Dell now wants to make its consumer PCs use 25% less power by 2010. For the world's second-largest PC maker, making that kind of a radical change in less than 24 months could prove to be an engineering challenge.

But then again, Dell seems to be playing the "one up" game with larger competitor Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ), which also played up the "green" card recently. The good news is that Dell's laptop and desktop computer systems --consumer and corporate -- are already some of the most energy efficient in the marketplace. And, if Dell can seize upon this projected change and sell energy reduction to the customer base it has instead of giga this and giga that, perhaps it can boost its sales. For many companies and consumers, even base models have enough horsepower to do most daily computing tasks. The "green-ness" of a new PC purchase could be the next frontier in PC marketing.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Hewlett-Packard (HPQ): Tech expert sees sees 'clear value'

In Next Inning newsletter, technology stock guru Paul McWilliams sees weakness in Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) as an opportunity to buy "one of the best-managed large cap tech companies in the world."

"Following Mark Hurd's appointment as CEO back in 2005, we turned cautiously bullish on the shares. It didn't take long to realize that he was not only making the right decisions, but also executing them swiftly and effectively.

"Hurd hit the ground running, trimming fat and restructuring both internal and sales channel operations. The net results were rapidly growing sales, improved profitability and a much higher stock price.

"Now, in line with our earnings preview, Hewlett Packard announced results that were better than the consensus expectation of the covering analysts; HPQ also raised its full year guidance.

"However, the real news is the company's intention to purchase EDS for $13.9 billion. The news of the acquisition has knocked the stock down to a level that represents a clear value opportunity.

"In my view, this is a brilliant move by HPQ and that the negotiated price represents a solid value for HPQ. I believe this represents an opportunity for investors to buy one of the best-managed large cap tech companies in the world at a clear value price."

So, to grow just 5%, the company will need to essentially create another Fortune 500 company.

That's something HP's CEO, Mark Hurd, definitely has mentioned on various occasions. Basically, how can a behemoth continue to grow?

Perhaps a smart strategy is to make big acquisitions?

Well, today HP has announced a hefty $13.9 billion buyout deal for EDS (NYSE: EDS), an information technology (IT) consulting operator. Over the past year, EDS posted about $22 billion in revenues.

But Hurd is not just concerned about the top-line. If anything, he's highly disciplined with generating profits. In fact, since he has come on board HP (back in 2005), Hurd has been masterful in finding efficiencies - while still pushing revenue growth.

While the history of transformative M&A is filled with failures, with the HP-Compaq combination a prime example of what can go wrong, the strategic rationale for the EDS deal makes sense. In today's global environment, customers want strong technologies but also sophisticated services. Actually, companies are increasingly outsourcing services to players like EDS.

Moreover, with much more heft, HP and EDS will become a formidable alternative to IBM (NYSE: IBM), which has proven the technology/services model.

Finally, I'm sure that Hurd will take out his cost-cutting knife. It's something that hasn't been emphasized but I'm sure it will be a big part of the deal.

While this combination would make HP the second largest, behind International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) in computer services, this may not be a good way to spend $12.8 billion.

That's because EDS and HP would under perform in services when it comes to profitability. EDS's bigger business earned a 1% net profit margin in the first quarter. But HP's services business generated a far higher 9% estimated net margin. Unfortunately -- for reasons described below -- the combined company will probably have lower margins.

Meanwhile, IBM's profit lagged HP's slightly -- it made an estimated 7% net margin in the first quarter in its services business. But IBM is and will remain a much bigger player. Combined, EDS and HP's services business will control 5.3% -- lagging IBM. That's because IBM controlled 7.2% of the tech-services market in 2007 while EDS was a distant second at 3% and HP was fifth, with a 2.3% share.

I think HP's most profitable business, printers, might be able to make better use of the $12.8 billion in capital. This Imaging and Printing Group earned a 13% estimated net margin. It grew a mere 4% to $7.3 billion in revenue and given that this unit is by far the most profitable in HP's stable of businesses, this would appear to be the best place to invest for future growth.

Now may be a good time to sell HP stock. Mark Hurd came into HP as a nuts-and-bolts operator. This deal suggests that Hurd has run out of growth options and that HP can't grow earnings through more cost cuts. I have no doubt that Hurd could cut costs once EDS has been integrated.

However, government work -- which accounts for the biggest part of EDS's revenue -- is inherently less profitable than the commercial work which HP performs in its services business. So, I would guess that the EDS merger will lower HP's services margins.

What HP really needs -- and lacks due to Hurd's particular skills -- is the ability to innovate as it did successfully in printers back in the 1980s and 1990s when it invented the highly profitable printer and ink business.

I remember in the early 1980s when FLR and then FWC would compete directly for all of the huge projects after the second oil shock.

Fluor's earnings have been obscured by a couple of overrun products over the years, deals that they lowball bid to do embassies basically to fill the order book. That's all changed now, as the company has cycled through those and is now winning huge business and not having a problem converting that business into earnings per share.

Foster Wheeler's doing the same. If it hadn't highlighted a small domestic issue signaling, falsely, to the analysts of problems to come, problems foretold by McDermott (NYSE: MDR) (Cramer's Take), it would be in the $70s by now, too.

I think it is going there.

Today.

Random musings: I am not a fan of the EDS (NYSE: EDS) (Cramer's Take) deal. I am a fan of Hewlett-Packard's (NYSE: HPQ) (Cramer's Take) Mark Hurd so he must see something. I had not thought of IBM (NYSE: IBM) (Cramer's Take) pulling away but it looks like that's been happening.

RELATED LINKS:

It has not created large enough software and services businesses to match the hardware sales.

HP brings in less that 25% of its revenue from services. But that business is growing quickly. According to the company's 10-Q, it had revenue of almost $4.4 billion in the first quarter. In the same period a year ago, that number was $3.9 billion.

The prevailing theory is that HP plans to buy EDS (NYSE: EDS) for $12.6 billion for its revenue from consulting and outsourcing to better compete against IBM (NYSE: IBM). That may be true, but the actual reason may be much more simple than that. With its stock up 50% over the last two years, HP needs a new business to keep its revenue growing and its shareholders happy. That is not going to come from its ink and printer business. Buying EDS almost guarantees another two years of rising revenue and earnings.

But investors also awaited several economic indicators due out today as well as speeches from several of the Federal Reserve members.

U.S. stocks finished the day with strong gains Monday thanks to a drop in crude oil futures and several deal speculations that hit the Street. The Dow industrials went up 130 points, or 1.02%, the Nasdaq Composite was up 42 points, or 1.76%, and the S&P 500 finished the day 15 points, or 1.10%, higher.

At 8:30 a.m. EDT April export and import prices as well as retail sales data are due. Economists expect retail sales to have declined 0.2%, and excluding autos, they expect sales to have increased 0.2% in the month. (NYSE: WMT) earnings.
The world's largest retailer, reported a 7% rise in quarterly profit. It seems that the current economic climate benefited the giant discount retailers as U.S. shoppers were out in droves looking for bargains even on necessities like food and pharmacy items.

Late Monday we also heard that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) could be near a deal to buy Electronic Data Systems Corp. However, BT Group will likely sign a 10-year contract to continue using the data centers with HP; BT Group just won't own them any longer.

But this isn't just a deal for HP to own more data centers as it beefs up its service provider portfolio in addition to its manufacturing prowess. BT Group is also going to manage the remainder of HP's voice and data networks worldwide. The London-based telecom company already handles HP's European voice and data networks, so this transaction is like trading a global service contract for a bunch of server farms. Or at least that's what is sounds like.

HP will continue to ramp up its portfolio of service offerings to better compete with IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM), a company that left the hardware business to focus on service contracts with corporate customers and that has done well at it under former CEO Lou Gerstner and current CEO Sam Palmisano. HP is already a larger company by revenues than IBM, but it doesn't have the service provider clout yet -- it's still first and foremost a manufacturing company.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Market highlights for next week: Wal-Mart and Hewlett-Packard reporting

Filed under: Earnings reports, Conventions and conferences, Annual meetings, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Wal-Mart (WMT), XM Satellite Radio (XMSR), Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI), Sprint Nextel Corp (S), Agilent Technologies (A), Applied Materials (AMAT), Toll Brothers (TOL), Economic data
Monday, May 12
Compal supplies laptops to HPQ, and said a shortage of batteries is responsible for the revised forecast. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on HPQ.

After hitting a one-year high of $53.48 in November, the stock hit a one-year low of $39.99 in January. This morning, HPQ opened at $48.24. So far today the stock has hit a low of $47.54 and a high of $53.48. As of 12:15, HPQ is trading at $48.15, down $0.12 (-0.25%). The chart for HPQ looks bullish and deteriorating slightly, while S&P gives the stock a bullish 4 Stars (out of 5) Buy rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a May bear-call credit spread above the $50 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 4.2% return in nine trading days as long as HPQ is below $50 at May expiration. HP would have to rise by more than 9% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

HPQ hasn't been above $50 since early January and has shown resistance around $48.50 recently. This trade could be risky if the company's earnings (due out on 5/15) are a positive surprise, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance HPQ might find around $48, where it has topped out a few times over the past three months.
